The Empty Circles in the Grass

Fairy circles, termite cities, old names, and the dryland marks that refuse a single answer.

At 3:08 in the morning, a dryland plain can look almost silver. The grass lowers itself into moonlight. The sand holds its breath. Then the headlights move across the ground and find the bare places: round, even, rimmed with taller stems, as if something pressed a glass into the earth and lifted it away.

These are the marks many researchers call fairy circles. In Namibia, they have been argued over for decades. In Western Australia, similar bare circles have been mapped, named, excavated, and contested. The shape looks simple from above. It is not simple once you kneel beside it.

The Circles Seen From the Sky

In 2023, a PNAS study used remote sensing and deep learning to search for fairy circle-like patterns across the planet. The result was not a smaller mystery. It was a larger one: 263 sites, spread across 15 countries and three continents.

The researchers linked these FC-like landscapes to dry places with low nutrients, high sand content, aridity, high temperatures, and strong seasonal rainfall. In other words, places where water is not background. Water is the story.

The circles appear where every root negotiates with dust. Some scientists argue that no animal is needed at all. Grass, soil, and water may arrange themselves into pattern through vegetation self-organization. Around a bare patch, plants can draw moisture from the open center. The empty space becomes part of the system.

That idea does not make the circles less strange. A landscape making geometry without a planner is still a quiet kind of haunting.

The same PNAS survey found that these patterned drylands may have more stable temporal productivity than nearby areas without the pattern. The blank disks may not be wounds. They may be a way of enduring hard seasons.

The Names That Were Already There

In Australia, some of these marks were never nameless.

A 2023 Nature Ecology and Evolution paper connected Australian bare circles known as linyji or mingkirri to Aboriginal art, narratives, soil excavation, and long observation of country. The paper did not treat Indigenous knowledge as atmosphere around the science. It treated it as evidence.

That changes the way the ground looks.

Walsh and colleagues argued that some hard bare circles are pavement nests occupied by Drepanotermes harvester termites. These termites gather grass and create hardened, pavement-like surfaces over their nest structures. From above, the surface may look empty. Under a careful scrape, it becomes chambers, galleries, grains, and movement.

The circle is empty only to the eye that stays too far away.

A name can hold method. It can tell someone where to look, when to look, what the surface means, and what not to mistake for absence. Linyji and mingkirri are not decorative labels placed beside a scientific map. They carry memory, work, food knowledge, and attention held across generations.

Termites, Thirst, and the Problem of One Answer

The argument has not settled.

A 2024 response challenged the broader claim that Australian fairy circles and termite linyji share the same mechanism. It argued for caution: similar-looking circles may not have the same maker.

That is where the word like matters. FC-like. Similar. Resembling. Close enough to compare, not close enough to convict.

In Namibia, termite explanations have long competed with vegetation explanations, especially theories involving sand termites under bare patches. In Australia, Drepanotermes termites are part of the discussion. In other places, plant-water feedback may be doing more of the work. In some landscapes, termites and vegetation may be tangled together so tightly that separating them becomes its own kind of fiction.

The same geometry can carry different histories.

A satellite can find a repeating mark. It can measure shape, spacing, color, and spread. It cannot smell dry roots after midnight. It cannot hear movement beneath a crust. It cannot ask who already knows the place.

From orbit, the land becomes pattern. At ground level, it becomes texture. Between those two views, the disagreement lives.

What the Empty Places Are Holding

The strongest answer, for now, may be plural.

Some circles may be made or maintained by termites. Some may emerge from plant-water feedback in sandy, thirsty soil. Some may be produced by interactions between insects, roots, rain, heat, and time. Drylands rarely give one clean cause for anything that survives there.

That does not weaken the mystery. It sharpens it.

A bare circle in wet country would mean something else. In Namibia fairy circles, Australian fairy circles, and the linyji and mingkirri of Aboriginal knowledge systems, the shape belongs to pressure. To heat. To seasonal rain. To life making room for itself at the edge of failure.

If you search for these places later, search gently. Read local and Indigenous sources before treating the land as an image. Stay with public research. Leave living drylands untouched.

Before dawn, the headlights turn away. The circles remain behind, pale and patient, holding their makers under the grass.
