The Viral Claim: EVs Are Uniquely Flammable

The electric vehicle fires panic has a simple script: EVs are rolling fireballs, more dangerous than gas cars, and one charging cable away from catastrophe.

The reason it sticks is obvious. EV battery fires can look terrifying. Lithium-ion battery failures can trigger thermal runaway, where heat spreads from cell to cell and the situation escalates fast. These fires can burn intensely, release toxic gases, and even reignite after crews think the emergency is over.

That is real. Nobody gets points for pretending EV battery fires are harmless.

But the viral claim quietly swaps two different questions. One is: how hard is an EV battery fire to fight? The other is: how often do EVs catch fire?

Those are not the same question. And the data wall is waiting.

The Denominator Enters the Chat

EV FireSafe, a project tracking electric vehicle fire incidents, recorded 393 verified passenger EV battery fires from 2010 to June 2023. During that period, roughly 30 million EVs were on roads globally.

Now, quick reality check: EV FireSafe says its database is foundational and does not capture every EV battery fire worldwide. So no, this is not a magic final answer carved into stone. But it does give us something viral clips refuse to provide: a denominator.

Three hundred ninety-three verified battery fires across more than a decade is not zero. It is also not exactly rolling-fireball territory.

For a cleaner comparison, Sweden gives us a sharper picture. In 2022, Swedish authorities reported 23 fires among 611,000 electric vehicles. That same year, they reported 3,400 fires among 4.4 million petrol and diesel vehicles.

That is where the viral story starts wobbling like a shopping cart with one cursed wheel.

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency data, cited by Swinburne University, found internal-combustion vehicles about 20 times more likely to catch fire. Swinburne’s Hussein Dia summarized the available evidence even more bluntly: fire risk is 20 to 80 times greater for petrol and diesel vehicles.

So yes, the burning EV clip may be real. As proof that EVs are uniquely fire-prone? That is influencer math wearing a firefighter helmet.

Why EV Fires Look So Much Scarier

Here is the part the myth gets half-right: electric car fire risk is not identical to gasoline car fire risk.

Gasoline cars have their own familiar danger menu: flammable liquid, hot exhaust systems, aging fuel lines, electrical faults, and millions of worn parts. But because we have seen gas-car fires for decades, they feel normal. Familiar danger gets filed under background noise.

What Owners, Firefighters, and Policymakers Should Actually Do

The honest takeaway is not that EVs never burn. They do. EV FireSafe tracks verified passenger EV battery fires connected to crashes, charging, manufacturing faults, arson, and other triggers. It also separates battery fires from ordinary vehicle fires, because not every burning EV is automatically a battery fire.

For owners, boring habits help. Use approved charging equipment. Avoid sketchy adapters. Stop using hardware that looks damaged, overheated, or suspiciously bargain-bin. Follow recall notices and software updates. If your EV has been in a serious crash or flood, get it inspected before charging it or storing it near living spaces.

For parking structures, ferries, and emergency planners, the answer is not panic. It is planning: ventilation, access, isolation procedures, clear routes, and staff who know what battery involvement looks like.

For fire departments, specialized EV training matters. Crews need procedures for high-voltage batteries, thermal monitoring, toxic gas exposure, and reignition risk.

For policymakers, better incident data would help everyone. Track vehicle type, age, crash history, charging context, and whether the battery was actually involved. Separate cabin fires from battery fires. Sort the evidence before yelling into the algorithm.

Verdict: Fireballs Need Context

The viral EV fire myth works by swapping categories. It takes hard to suppress and dresses it up as likely to happen.

The available fire datasets do not support the claim that EVs catch fire more often than gasoline cars. They point the other way: petrol and diesel vehicles show much higher fire risk in the data we have.

So here is the verdict: your EV is not a rolling fireball. It is a machine with real risks, specific failure modes, and a very loud internet reputation.
