You’re on a client call. The client asks a serious question. At that exact moment, your neighbor starts attacking leaves with what sounds like a gas-powered jet engine on a stick.
You do the remote-work dance: smile, mute, unmute too early, apologize, mute again. The noise is annoying, but the real problem is that we now have software that can handle a lot of this — if you pick the right tool and test it before the important call.
This episode was about AI noise cancellation that actually works in live calls. Not meeting summaries. Not another bot joining your calendar invite. Just cleaner audio when your keyboard, dog, espresso grinder, or shared office decides to participate.
Start With the Free Tools You Already Have
The biggest surprise from testing was how useful the built-in options have become. If you spend most of your day in one meeting app, start there before adding another subscription.
Microsoft Teams Voice Isolation is the boring-but-useful example. It asks you to create a 30-second voice profile, then uses that profile to separate your voice from everything around it. One practical privacy detail: Microsoft says users can delete their voice profile and turn Voice Isolation off in meeting audio settings. That matters. A voice profile may not feel scary, but it is still personal enough that teams should explain how it works in plain language.
Zoom Is Good Enough for a Lot of Client Calls
Zoom personalized audio isolation works in a similar way. You create a voiceprint recording inside Zoom, and the app uses that to do a better job filtering background noise.
The setup is a bit more hidden than it should be. You need to find the right settings, train the voiceprint, and then remember the feature exists before your next call. Once it’s on, though, it can make a real difference.
The espresso grinder test was better than expected. That low, angry growl dropped behind the voice instead of swallowing it. Fans, typing, and moderate room noise are exactly the kind of distractions Zoom can smooth out well enough for consultants, coaches, sales calls, and remote teams.
The dog test was less perfect. Sharp barks still punched through sometimes, which feels fair. They also punched through the host’s patience.
The limitation is simple: Zoom helps Zoom. It does not clean up Slack huddles, browser-based calls, Teams meetings, or a recording app unless those tools are also using some version of audio cleanup. If your workday mostly happens inside Zoom, that may be fine. If your calendar is a chaotic mix of every meeting link invented, you may need a separate audio layer.
When Krisp Earns the Subscription
Krisp makes sense because it sits between your real microphone and almost any app you use. You choose Krisp as your microphone, select your actual headset inside Krisp, and then Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Slack, and recording tools hear the cleaned version.
That is the appeal: one setup for the whole workday.
Krisp’s Core plan lists unlimited noise cancellation starting at $16 monthly, or $8 per user per month when billed annually. That is not outrageous, but it is still another subscription. So the question is not whether Krisp works. It usually does. The question is whether you need one audio layer across many platforms.
In the test, Krisp was the most set-it-and-forget-it option. Keyboard noise disappeared without fiddling with settings. The espresso grinder dropped hard. The dog softened. Nearby speech became less distracting, though not always fully gone when another voice overlapped with the speaker.
The downside is that Krisp can make your voice sound airbrushed. Clean, yes. Natural, not always — especially if you are using a cheap laptop microphone. It also now bundles transcription, AI notes, integrations, and meeting features. Those may be useful, but noise cancellation is still the reason to pay.
For privacy-sensitive teams, read the plan details closely. Krisp’s Enterprise tier advertises options like private transcription and on-device recordings for organizations. That may matter if your company has rules around call data, notes, or recordings.
The practical verdict: freelancers, recruiters, consultants, and client-facing professionals who jump between platforms should trial Krisp. Employees who live entirely in Teams probably do not need it.
NVIDIA Broadcast Is Excellent — If You Already Have the Hardware
NVIDIA Broadcast is the specialty pick. It offers AI Noise Removal and Room Echo Removal for things like typing, microphone static, PC fans, and room reverb. In the test, it handled room echo better than the others. The voice sounded closer and less like it was coming from a bathroom.
But there is a catch: hardware. NVIDIA Broadcast is built around NVIDIA RTX and GeForce systems. It is not a universal web app for any laptop.
If you already have a compatible gaming laptop or creator desktop, Broadcast is a gift. Try it before buying a better microphone. If you do not already have the hardware, do not buy a GPU to fix conference calls. Buy a decent headset first.
Broadcast also adds another desktop app, virtual audio devices, GPU dependency, and one more place to troubleshoot when a meeting starts. That is fine for streamers and video creators. It is overkill if your main enemy is Tuesday’s leaf blower.
The Five-Minute Test Before You Spend Money
Here’s the decision tree.
If your calls are mostly Teams, create the voice profile and test Voice Isolation. If your calls are mostly Zoom, turn on personalized audio isolation and record the voiceprint. If the built-in option fails across multiple apps, try Krisp. If you already own RTX hardware and care about echo, test NVIDIA Broadcast.
Do not test with silence. Test with your actual mess: dishwasher, mechanical keyboard, hallway conversation, barking dog, café noise, or the headset you really use.
Record yourself for two minutes. Read a paragraph while typing. Play chatter nearby. Listen back with headphones. You’re checking three things: did the noise drop, did your words stay clear, and did your voice turn metallic?
If the answer is yes, yes, and no, stop upgrading. Your clients do not care which tool you use. They care whether they can hear you and whether the dog becomes part of the agenda.
The best order is simple: built-in isolation first, Krisp trial second, NVIDIA Broadcast only if your machine already qualifies. Test once before the big call, set the winner, and stop apologizing for the leaf blower.
