Can ChatGPT answer your tax question, or could it confidently lead you into trouble? This episode breaks down where AI tax assistants are genuinely useful: checklists, definitions, document reminders, and navigation inside filing software. We also cover where they get risky, especially for deductions, 1099 income, business mileage, rentals, multi-state work, and IRS notices.

Don’t Let ChatGPT Do Your Taxes

AI tax assistants are great for checklists, definitions, and navigation. They are not your accountant.

You’re staring at a business mileage question in your tax software, and suddenly the screen wants proof. The trip felt deductible when you took it. Now you’re imagining an IRS letter six months from now and wondering: could ChatGPT just tell me what counts?

That’s the exact line this episode draws. AI tax assistants can save you time. They can explain confusing terms, remind you which documents to gather, and help you find the right screen. But when the answer changes what you owe, a confident chatbot can become an expensive shortcut.

What AI Tax Assistants Are Actually Good At

Tax software has used automation for years: calculations, form routing, imports, error checks. The newer piece is conversational help inside the filing workflow.

TurboTax Intuit Assist, for example, is Intuit’s generative AI assistant across TurboTax, Credit Karma, QuickBooks, and Mailchimp. Inside TurboTax, it’s meant to help users file accurately and faster by explaining the next step in plain English.

H&R Block AI Tax Assist works similarly inside its online filing experience, built with Azure AI Foundry and Azure OpenAI Service. If you’re already using H&R Block, that kind of real-time help can be useful when the software asks a question in tax-speak.

The sweet spot is boring, and that’s good. Ask: “What documents might I need for freelance income?” or “What does adjusted gross income mean?” or “Where do I enter a 1099-NEC?”

Those are checklist, definition, and navigation questions. Low drama. Low risk. Very much worth using AI for.

Where ChatGPT Taxes Get Risky

The danger starts when you ask AI to make a judgment call.

Business mileage is a classic trap. Driving to a client meeting may count. Driving from home to your usual workplace usually does not. An AI assistant can explain those categories, but your actual records decide the answer.

Same with home office deductions. A chatbot can define “exclusive use,” but your layout, business type, and documentation matter. Client coffee? AI can explain business meals, but your facts determine whether the expense holds up.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service has warned taxpayers not to rely solely on AI-generated answers for complex tax questions. It also cited an informal review where leading tax-prep chatbots missed or mishandled up to half of complex questions.

That does not mean every AI answer is wrong. It means the riskiest answers often sound the most polished.

A safer prompt is: “What documentation should I have before claiming this?” Another good one: “List possible questions, missing documents, and risks. Do not decide the deduction for me.”

That turns AI into preparation, not authority.

The Practical Decision Tree

Start with income. Do you only have W-2 wages, basic interest, and a standard deduction situation? If yes, check whether IRS Direct File is available for your state and tax situation.

Treasury and the IRS made Direct File a permanent free filing option after a pilot used by 140,000 taxpayers. Treasury said pilot users claimed more than $90 million in refunds and saved estimated filing costs. For eligible simple returns, it may be the cleanest path.

If you’re using TurboTax or H&R Block anyway, use their AI for explanations, missing-document reminders, and where-to-click help. Just watch the price before you commit. The FTC issued a final order finding Intuit used deceptive advertising around “free” TurboTax claims, so compare the actual total cost for your forms, state return, and support needs.

If you have freelance income, creator income, consulting work, rental property, marketplace insurance, education credits, childcare credits, or state quirks, slow down. AI can help you organize, but you may need official IRS instructions, software human support, or a credentialed tax professional.

If you received an IRS notice, do not experiment with chatbot advice. Get qualified human help.

The Best Way to Use AI Before You File

Here’s the simple rule: if a wrong answer wastes ten minutes, AI may help. If a wrong answer changes what you owe, verify it.

Use ChatGPT taxes prompts for learning vocabulary and preparing questions. Don’t paste sensitive tax documents into random tools without checking privacy settings. Summarize the issue without personal identifiers when you can.

Better yet, ask AI to help you build a prep packet:

“What records should I gather for 1099 income?”

“What questions should I ask a tax professional about business mileage?”

“What documents usually support a home office deduction?”

Then compare the list against what you actually have: receipts, mileage logs, invoices, payment records, and notes about business purpose.

The honest verdict: AI tax assistants work best when the answer is procedural, educational, or checklist-shaped. TurboTax Intuit Assist is useful if you already like TurboTax and want help inside the workflow. H&R Block AI Tax Assist may fit if you want software assistance with a clearer path to human support. IRS Direct File should be on the shortlist for eligible simple returns. ChatGPT is helpful for learning, not for making the final call on your tax position.

This week, try one low-risk use: ask an AI assistant for a tax document checklist, then verify it against your actual forms. Let AI organize the shoebox and explain the jargon. When the answer changes your return, bring in backup.
